Robert Harvie was born at ‘Kelvin Bank’ in 1872 and attended the Riverton Primary School before being enrolled at Way College, Unley under Dr. W.G. Torr.  Records indicate that he did well in all subjects, excelling in Dictation, Shorthand, Drawing and Smithing and was Dux of his class in 1892  On his return to “Kelvin Bank” he assisted his father on the property and became interested in local affairs.  Robert was a member of the Volunteer Rifles and also the Literary Society winning several prizes for his debating prowess, singing and elocution.  He was a member of the Methodist Church Choir for many years and in latter years served on the District Council, the Hospital Board and the Institute Committee.  He was a keen administrator of the local Football Club, a golfer and in 1930 an inaugural member of the Riverton Lawn Bowling Club.

Robert married Minnie Elizabeth Gillingham, born at Penrice to Rev. John Gillingham and his wife Mary (Williams).  Minnie was the seventh child of the Rev. Gillingham, a Wesleyan Minister who with his wife and family moved to Riverton in 1897.

Following Robert’s marriage his parents moved to “Kelvin House” in Torrens Road, Riverton.

In 1926 after building a wood and iron house in Cooper Street, Robert sold the farm to a Mr Jack Cramer-Roberts and moved into the town with his 3 daughters, Chrissie, Stella and Joyce.  He had purchased several acres of land on the western side of Cooper St and built an 8 roomed home in Paul Street which he also named “Kelvin Bank”. Soon after moving into the new residence he remarried Evelyn Mary Wait, daughter of George Wait and Maria (Uppill).
